CHRISTIAN HISTORY

History??? I gave up on history when I left High School. Why would I want to read anything about history now? History??? Who wants to read history?

Yes, I know. History is just - history. But, there are some great reasons to check out what happened in the past - especially in our Christian past. What happened today in the past in our churches? How did a new church or religious group come about? What Christian leader started the first movement against, or for, something that was happening in the world at that time? And, how did something we are doing today get started - and why - and by whom?

Jesus was constantly referring to events and teachings of the past when He talked with His followers (and detractors.) And people understood what He was saying because they understood the references He used.

And we should be just as informed of our historical events today. How have we come to the place we are in the world - the church - our religious lives?

READ UP ON
AFRICAN CHURCH HISTORY
The history of the Christian church in Europe and North America is well documented, and names like Martin Luther, John Wesley and George Whitefield are familiar to many Christians as just some of the many believers throughout history who have shaped the
development of the modern church in the West. But what course has the Christian church in Africa taken in the meantime?
The leaders, teachers, and visionaries who have paved the way for Christianity throughout the many nations and cultures of Africa aren't nearly so well known, despite the importance of their contributions to Christianity. The Dictionary of African Christian Biography is an ambitious attempt to preserve the stories and histories of African Christianity. The DACB is a large and growing online database of biographies of African Christian leaders who have contributed to the growth of Christianity throughout the continent. The database, begun
in 1997 and scheduled for completion in 2010, is subdivided by country for easy browsing, and makes for a highly educational read, especially for anyone hitherto unfamiliar with the history of African Christianity.
